If it's too warm for a down jacket but still too cold for a light transitional coat, an interim solution is needed. Ideally, a waistcoat that fits under a jacket, blazer, or coat, but can also be worn over them. This means the waistcoat must not be too heavy or too thick, as it wouldn't fit then, and it wouldn't look good.
